North Sikkim: The most beautiful of districts, the North offers an exotic experience for the lover of nature and alpine scenery.Yumthang alone is enough to satiate the most demanding, with its panoramic valley of flowers. We could say Yumthang as the 'Switzerland of the Eas't. There are other sectors too which are unbelievable and unforgetable. The main places of attraction include:
1.Lachung: A Bhutia village located at an altitude of 8000 ft above sea level, has emerged as a popular tourist destination as it is just 25 kms frm Yumthang Valley. Here a unique self-governing body called 'Zumsa' substitutes the 'Pahchayat'. A visit to the Lachung Monastery will get you a glimpse of the local religious functions performed there.

2.Yumthang: Located 140 kms from Gangtok this scenic grandeur has a
fascinating blend of flora and fauna. This valley is also the home of 'Shing-
bha Rhododendron Santuary' with 25 species of rhododendrons. Yumth-
ang 'Tsa-Chu' or the hot spring is popular for its healing and curative po-
wers.
3.Lachen: Located at an altitude of 2750 mtrs. above sea level is about 6 hrs drive from Gangtok. One can get a panoramic view of the surrounding hills and country side from the Lachen Monastery which is located at the top of the village.

4.Thangu: Visitors usually acclimatize in this small village before they proceed to Gurudongmar Lake, located at altitude of 14,000 ft(plus) and 3 hrs drive from Lachen.
5.Guru-dongmar Lake: Located at an altitude of 17,800 ft this lake is considered one of the sacred lakes of the state.It remains milky in colour throughout the year and is believed that Guru Padmasambhava had touched the lake whilst he visited Tibet from this area.
6.Katao: Here exquisite scenic grandeur and snow remain companion throughout the year.
7.Yume-Semdong:Located at 15,500 ft gives a breathtaking view of snow and flowers. |
